The History of IAIDO


SEITEI IAIDO (制定 居合道) Style Origins

This is the most modern IAIDO style, and is directed by the Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei (ZNKR - All Japan Kendo Federation).

In 1952, year of Japan’s independence restoration after Second World War, Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei (institution which knits together the whole Japan’s Kendo activity) was created. In 1968 illustrious masters of three different styles (Muso Shinden Ryu, Hoki Ryu and Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu), created a 7 Katas (ways) abridgment, which they called “Seitei Gata” (standard way).

MUSO SHINDEN RYU (夢想神伝流) Style Origins

Muso Shinde Ryu (夢想神伝流) is a Koryu (ancient school or traditional school), and literally means “divine’s dream school”. It was founded in the early twentieth century, by Nakayama Hakudo Sensei (中山博道), 16th. Shimomura line’s Soke , from the school created by Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu.

Nakayama Hakudo Sensei studied Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu in Tosa, being directed by Hosokawa Yoshimasa, 15th. Shimomura line’s Soke, as well as Morimoto Tokumi, 17th. Tanimura line’s Soke.
Nakayama Sensei was a huge KENDO, IAIDO and JODO master and was the one who popularized the term IAIDO, putting strong emphasis on the importance of the spiritual side when training the use of the sword, as a way of improving himself.

The Muso Shinden Ryu Koryu is divided into three main training levels: Shoden (elemental level), Chuden (intermediate level) y Okuden (advanced level), It also has a big amount of Kumitachi techniques.

Muso Shinden Ryu’s Shoden level’s name comes from Omori Ryu (大森流) style, and ows the next 12 Katas:

Muso Shinden Ryu’s Okuden leve lis the ultimate one and is also called Oku-Iai (奥居合). It is divided into two groups: Tachi Waza (立業) and Suwari Waza (座業) this means, respectively, stood up position, and sat down position, doing this one from tate-hiza. This style ows these katas:
